In 2018, my husband and I started a journey to change our financial future. We were staring at over $150,000 in debt and knew something had to shift.⁠

By the end of 2021, we paid off our largest debt — $131,000 — and yes, we recorded the moment because it took everything in us to get there. That payoff changed our lives.⁠

Some changes have been made to our cash envelope/sinking fund amounts this year.⁠

We recently reduced some expenses due to upcoming income changes. The expenses we reduced were car maintenance, housing expenses, and entertainment.⁠

Having cash aside and or allocated for these expenses has been really clutch. ⁠
⁠
It allows us to stay within our budget, to not have to dig into our savings, and keeps us from using our credit cards for expected one-time expenses or random emergencies.⁠

I was in the market for a new home but after watching people pay hundreds of thousands above asking and market value, waive contingencies, and offer cash offers, I realized it's ABOVE ME NOW.⁠

I'm thoroughly convinced that there may be quite a few regretful homebuyers in the future and I don't want to be one of them.⁠

It can be really easy to lose your head and make an emotional decision about the place you lay your head but it's equally important to stay grounded and ask yourself some questions, such as:⁠

Can I afford the monthly payment?⁠
Does this decision put me at risk?⁠
How does this decision negatively and positively impact me in the future?⁠
Does this align with my values, and goals?⁠
What am I compromising?⁠
⁠
So for now my dream home will have to wait.⁠

Something that has been key in keeping our finances organized is having multiple accounts for different purposes.⁠
⁠
We have multiple checking accounts for family and personal expenses, multiple savings accounts for short-term and long-term savings goals, and multiple investment accounts.⁠
⁠
Although we take cash out each month for cash envelope and some sinking fund expenses, the rest is automated to help with ease of managing our bills and expenses.⁠
